Partial Renovation

Square Meters

7

This project involved the renovation of a compact 7 sqm bathroom located in the altillo of a loft on Passeig de Gràcia, conceived to transform the master bedroom into a fully integrated ensuite.

The client’s brief was clear: preserve the original volta catalana ceiling, create an open and contemporary shower space, maintain continuous flooring throughout the room, and integrate a washing machine and dryer — all within a highly constrained footprint. The result is a calm, functional, and architecturally expressive bathroom that balances heritage and modern living.

The project originated from the need to introduce a second bathroom in the loft’s mezzanine level, allowing the master bedroom to function as an ensuite while respecting the architectural identity of the space. With only 7 square meters available and a vaulted ceiling that could not be concealed, the design required a precise and highly controlled approach.

Design Approach

Rather than dividing the space into separate functional zones, the bathroom was conceived as a single, continuous volume, where architecture, materials, and light define the layout.

Key design principles included:

  • Preserving and highlighting the volta catalana, leaving the ceiling fully exposed
  • Maintaining visual continuity to enhance the perception of space
  • Minimizing visual barriers to keep the bathroom open and light

The vaulted ceiling became a defining element, guiding proportions and reinforcing the identity of the room.

Shower Design and Spatial Continuity

The shower area was designed as an open walk-in space, separated only by a single glass panel. This solution allows natural light to flow uninterrupted throughout the bathroom while maintaining functional separation.

Design choices included:

  • Continuous flooring extending seamlessly into the shower
  • A linear drain integrated discreetly into the floor
  • A recessed wall niche for storage, avoiding additional elements

This approach reinforces the sense of openness and avoids fragmenting the space.

Functionality and Integrated Storage

Despite the reduced footprint, the bathroom accommodates all essential functions without compromising clarity or comfort.

The layout includes:

  • A wall-hung toilet to visually lighten the space
  • A custom vanity with integrated storage
  • A concealed laundry column housing washing machine and dryer, fully integrated into the architectural composition

Every element was carefully positioned to maximize usability while maintaining a clean and uncluttered aesthetic.

Materials and Atmosphere

The material palette was intentionally restrained, selected to complement the historic character of the space while enhancing light and spatial continuity.

Materials include:

  • Stone-effect surfaces with soft mineral tones
  • Matte finishes to reduce visual noise
  • Neutral colors that reflect and diffuse natural light

Together, these choices create a calm and timeless atmosphere that allows the architecture to remain the focal point.

The Result

The completed bathroom feels spacious, serene, and balanced despite its compact size. What began as a technical constraint became a defining design feature, resulting in an ensuite that respects the building’s history while fully meeting contemporary living requirements.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful design, material discipline, and architectural sensitivity can transform even the smallest spaces into refined and functional environments designed for long-term use.
