This project was a full renovation of a historic apartment located on Rambla de Catalunya, in the heart of Barcelona. The intervention focused on restoring the architectural character of the space while adapting it to contemporary living standards.

High ceilings, hydraulic mosaic floors, and generous proportions defined the original apartment. These elements were preserved and enhanced to create a calm, elegant interior that feels timeless and balanced.

The project involved the complete renovation of a historic apartment located on Rambla de Catalunya, Barcelona. The existing space retained strong architectural features — high ceilings, original hydraulic mosaic floors, and generous room proportions — but suffered from outdated layouts and years of wear.

The intervention aimed to restore clarity to the apartment while adapting it to contemporary living requirements. Rather than introducing contrast, the project focused on refinement: preserving the architectural identity of the space and enhancing it through precise spatial and material decisions.

Design Approach

The renovation was guided by a principle of continuity. Instead of treating each room as an isolated environment, the apartment was conceived as a cohesive architectural sequence where proportions, materials, and light define the experience.

Key design principles included:

  • Preserving original architectural elements such as mosaic floors and ceiling moldings
  • Improving spatial flow between living, dining, and private areas
  • Reducing visual noise through a restrained material palette
  • Enhancing natural light without altering the original openings

This approach allowed the apartment to retain its historic character while gaining spatial clarity and functional efficiency.

Living and Dining Spaces

The living and dining areas were reconfigured to emphasize openness and proportion. Unnecessary partitions were removed, restoring the apartment’s original rhythm and improving the distribution of natural light.

Rather than introducing decorative elements, the design relied on architectural features — ceiling height, wall proportions, and floor patterns — to define the space. Neutral finishes were used to create a calm backdrop, allowing the existing structure to remain the focal point.

Kitchen Integration

The kitchen was fully redesigned and integrated into the overall architectural language of the apartment. The layout prioritized functionality while maintaining visual continuity with adjacent spaces.

Design choices included:

  • Custom built-in cabinetry with integrated appliances
  • Stone surfaces selected for durability and material coherence
  • A simplified composition that avoids visual fragmentation

The result is a kitchen that functions as an architectural element rather than a separate room, reinforcing the continuity of the apartment.

Bathroom Design

Bathrooms were completely rethought to improve comfort, usability, and spatial balance. The main bathroom was redesigned as a generous, light-filled space featuring a double vanity and a walk-in shower.

Key design decisions included:

  • Clear separation of functions without visual barriers
  • Integrated storage to minimize clutter
  • Wall-mounted sanitary ware to visually lighten the space

These choices contribute to a bathroom that feels open, calm, and proportionate, despite the technical constraints of the existing structure.

Materials and Atmosphere

The material palette was intentionally restrained, allowing the architecture to define the atmosphere. Finishes were selected to complement the historic context of the apartment while supporting a contemporary lifestyle.

Materials include:

  • Restored hydraulic mosaic floors
  • Mineral-based wall finishes with subtle texture
  • Natural stone surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Warm metal accents used sparingly

Together, these elements create a timeless and balanced environment where materials age gracefully and remain visually consistent over time.

Construction Process

The renovation was carried out through a carefully organized construction process, with attention given to precision, sequencing, and site order. From demolition to final detailing, each phase was managed to ensure consistency between design intent and execution.

The work-in-progress phase reflected a controlled and methodical approach, allowing complex interventions to be carried out without compromising the existing structure.

The Result

The completed apartment presents a refined interpretation of a classic Barcelona residence. The project respects the building’s architectural identity while offering a contemporary, functional living environment.

What began as a space affected by time and fragmentation was transformed into a cohesive, calm, and enduring interior — demonstrating how architectural sensitivity, material discipline, and careful execution can elevate historic apartments for modern living.
